3 Fun and Unique Ways to use your Vintage Letter Board:

How fun are the letter letter boards that are so popular right now?!  I just bought this one for a great price!   It is 10×10 and comes with 326 letters.  As a mom, I can think of so many ways to use it.  For those of you that don’t know I am a homeschool mom of 4 little ones and a newborn photographer.  I am sharing 3 unique ways to use your letter board.  And I am sure there are so many more ideas that I have not thought of yet.  So be sure to share your ideas with me in the comments!

3 ways to use your letter board

  1.  Homeschooling:   I love this for my homeschool room!  I have 2 children that are learning to read and this is such a great manipulative for them.  My son also has dyslexia.  And, this gives him the visual and hands on interaction he needs.  My little girls is just learning the alphabet and she just has a great time playing with the letters and asking me ” What letter this, mama?”   LOL!
  2. Newborn Announcement:  I can’t wait to use this for my next fresh 48 newborn session!  How amazing is this when photographed next to the newborn baby with the baby’s birth weight, height, and name spelled out.  It looks great and adds a special touch to the newborn session.
  3. Daily Scripture and Encouragement:  This is great to put next to your coffee maker with a daily scripture verse.  Or, a sweet message to your husband.  My husband loves to read a message first thing in the morning that is just for him.  One way to remind him that you love him during those super busy days with a newborn baby!

So there you have it!  3 of my favorite ideas for using your letter board.  I hope you enjoyed this and at least found one new thing to use your letter board for:)

5 Tips on What to Wear For Photos:

Here are some of my favorite outfits for Family Photos.  I am also sharing 5 tips for choosing the best looks for your family.

  1.  Start with Mom:  This is the most valuable tip I can give!  It is always the hardest to choose your own outfit.  Am I right?!? So find something you love and feel comfortable and beautiful in.  Once mom’s outfit is chosen, the rest of the outfits can be coordinated with hers.  I would always suggest a flowing long dress, you can do a solid color or a pattern.  These dresses photograph beautifully and can be worn over and over again.  This dress & this dress would look gorgeous!  Also this dress is one of my FAVES!
  2.   Choose one Patterned outfit:  Choosing one person to wear a pattern and the rest of the family to wear solid colors is always a great idea.  For example, Mom would choose a beautiful floral dress and the kids would wear colors that coordinates with her outfit.  I love these outfits for newborns, babies, and children.  This is one of my favorites for baby girls and the knitted bottom is just gorgeous!
  3. Textures:  Textures and layers add so much interest to photos.  Add a scarf or a cardigan.  Layer a sweater over a button up long sleeve shirt for dad.
  4. Avoid logos or appliques:  I always suggest avoiding logos and appliques.  I know they are cute out and about. But, they are totally distracting in photographs. So leave the cute sweater with the adorable heart applique at home:)
  5. Make sure the outfits reflect you:  Lastly,  make sure you feel like yourself!  If you are wearing a dress and you feel completely weird in a dress then wear a pair of skinny jeans, great shoes, and and oversized sweater.  Also, make sure kids are not itchy or wearing clothes that are uncomfortable.  It will show it pictures.

I loved meeting baby Hattie!  She was so tiny.  We actually got to schedule her newborn session on her due date. Hattie was born very early.  Fortunately,  she is doing fine and growing steadily now.   Her mom brought in a fabulous wreath to the session.  We spent a few hours together in my studio located in the Buford, Georgia area just off I-85.  I love the simplicity of newborn photos with lots of neutral colors and greenery is always great!  Hattie is just too cute!  This is the wreath that hangs in her nursery at her home.  How neat will it be to see how she grows in relationship to this wreath?

Whew!  I am so glad to have most of the changes on my site finished.  It really is a huge undertaking!  Please let me know if a link isn’t working or something else is not right.  I think I have most of the bugs worked out.  Well, it has been a busy spring photographing lots of newborn babies.  I love newborns and they are one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  It is the most amazing feeling to be a new parent. There is something about newborn babies that makes me melt. Maybe it is how tiny and fresh they are.  I love getting to photograph the first days of a newborn baby’s life.  If you are interested in planning a newborn session, contact me today. These are days you will want to remember and days that pass by so quickly.  In a blink of the eye, your baby will be all grown up and going off to college.  Cherish each and every moment with your baby.

This little guy was so sleepy and adorable!  I don’t think he made a peep during his entire session.  You never know how a newborn baby will sleep, but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. I love using a neutral, organic palette of colors for my newborn sessions. Soft blankets and cozy wraps are also a few of my favorite things.

(My site is updating and looks crazy right now!  But, this wedding would look beautiful anywhere!!)

Chelsea and Joshua had the wedding that dreams are made of this last Saturday!  They celebrated at the Marriott Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.  I was thrilled to capture their beautiful wedding day.  As a wedding photographe,r I get to photography many weddings and this one was over the top!  Gorgeous flowers, fantastic DJ, yummy food, were just a few of the things that made it an amazing wedding day.  I could go on and on.  On top of all that, the Bride was as beautiful as she was sweet.  She had a great team and a wonderful family supporting her. I know she and Joshua will have a beautiful marriage. We had great weather and the only rain of the day happened during the ceremony. We were able to head outside for some fun downtown pictures, yay! Steve Brueck, the bride’s stepdad, runs a weather facebook page.  Make sure to check him out to keep up to date on all the weather happenings in Georgia!!  This is just a small sneek peek of the wedding day.  More to  come.  Thank you to my wonderful second photographer who captured so many great shots during the evening Adrea Thomas Photography. She is such a fun person and I am so glad we met!  So go check her out!

I have been a newborn photographer for quite awhile and when I first started out…. well let’s say I had a lot of things to learn!  I have made many mistakes regarding styling a newborn session and know what works and what doesn’t.  EVEN naturally styled newborns takes experience to get an attractive photo of a newborn.  I did everything just like I was told with my first newborn baby-  my own.  I had imagined a perfectly happy baby and lovely light and skin.  Reality?  I had images of a screaming newborn, red faced and angry!  Eekk!  Not what I wanted at all.  So I thought I would share my best tips for getting the newborn images you dream of.

Feed your baby!

The more you feed your baby the better! A hungry baby is not a happy newborn.   Newborn babies need to nurse frequently and for a long time.  You can always get back on a schedule after the session.  Make sure your photographer is willing to stop the session and let  your newborn baby nurse for as long as needed.  A milk coma is a good thing!  If this is your first newborn, you will most likely be surprised at how often babies do need to nurse.

The room will be warm!

My studio is heated to the perfect temperature for newborns.  Newborns get cold so easily.  Especially if they are naked at all for the photo session.  I am hot by nature and usually after a baby new mom’s hormones are creating lots of hot flashes!  So remember to dress in layers for the session and that way you will be comfortable during your newborns photo session.  The best thing to do is dress comfortable and change into your outfit to be photographed in only when it is time for you to be in the picture.

Soft flowing Dresses, Light airy colors, and Coordinate Clothing!

I can’t stress enough how much clothing effects the look of your images!  Wear light and airy colors that are soft and feminine.  Think blush, cream, white, soft grey.  This will create a soft newborn image and look lovely against a newborn’s skin.  Lace and details add a great touch to dresses and blouses.  Light grey or white jeans work well also.  Try to avoid blue jeans.  New moms look wonderful in flowing dresses.  They hid any belly you might have after having  your baby.  I know that now matter how skinny you might be that there is still a bit of belly left at 6 days postpartum.  Bring back up tops or dresses just in case you get peed or pooped on! Light gray shirts with Khakis or Cream sweaters or shirts work great for guys.  Dressier is better. Try to avoid t-shirts and polos.  Button downs always look great!  Start shopping while you are pregnant for clothing for you, your husband, and any children you may have already!  This is a perfect dress and this blouse is fabulous with white jeans!

White Bedding!

White bedding is fabulous for newborn photos.  White bedding lightens up the whole room.  Light and airy photos don’t happen on dark bedding with dark walls.  It is such a treat to have new bedding after your newborn arrives. Have a relative put your new bedding on your bed so when you come home you have a gorgeous room waiting for you!   Here is the bedding we have and love!  I also have white bedding in my studio with white walls for the perfect photo setup.

Lavender Essential Oil!

This is a life changer! Not only for newborn photos, but for all the time at home.  There are so many ways to use Lavender essential oil.  You can diffuse it into the air for a calming effect.  You can also roll it onto your newborns feet. Make sure it is certified thereputic grade oil!  So important! You don’t want to introduce toxins to your newborn.  I diffuse this in my homeschool classroom constantly!  It has made such a difference in my children.  We roll it onto our feet before bed.  My little babies sleep so soundly.   Sign up for a doTerra essential oil wholesale account to get great pricing on quality oils.  The diffuser below functions wonderfully and I haven’t had any problems with it breaking like others I have used.

This beautiful Mom booked my Maternity and Newborn collection and it is so special to see a mom to be for her maternity photos and then again for her newborn.  I get to meet the little tiny baby that was in her belly just a few weeks before.  Look how tiny and sweet her little hands are in this picture!  She was a tiny little newborn baby and simple a doll during her newborn session.

This is my very favorite and I love the organic and natural newborn baby , maternity, and family photography. My home studio is located just outside of Atlanta in the Buford, GA area close to Hamilton Mill and I-85.  I would love to hear from you if you are expecting a newborn and would like more information on maternity or newborn photography.

I have also been wanting to talk about some of my favorite baby items.  If you don’t know, I have four of my own sweet babies!  I have had lots of experience with baby equipment!  Stollers!  Some are great and some just give new moms headaches!  I love the one I currently have.  It is a Britax Stroller. I love it!  It folds up with one hand and is perfect for the mall or running.  I also have the infant carrier that clicks in and it is a must have car seat.  My second favorite item for newborns is the Ergo Carrier.  I have tried them all!  This one is hands down the most comfortable and vesatile carrier.  The newborn support is need for newborns and works great.  I still can hike with my 3 year old on my back.
